USF TGH Family Medicine Residency
About the Program
Rooted in academic medicine, committed to community health — training the next generation of family physicians in Tampa, Florida.
Program Overview
The USF TGH Family Medicine Residency is a three-year ACGME-accredited training program affiliated with the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and Tampa General Hospital. Founded in 2023 by Dr. Karim Hanna, the program welcomed its inaugural class in July 2025 and is one of the newest family medicine residencies in the state of Florida. We are committed to training compassionate, skilled family physicians who are prepared to lead in primary care.
Our program takes a holistic approach to health, integrating physical, mental, and social dimensions of patient care. Residents receive comprehensive training in both inpatient and outpatient settings, preparing them to serve diverse patient populations across the full spectrum of family medicine.
USF Health Morsani College of Medicine ranks in the top 50 nationally for medical research (U.S. News & World Report) and is the largest multispecialty practice on Florida's West Coast, with over 1,000 providers in more than 30 specialties serving more than one million patients annually.

What Sets Us Apart
True Interprofessional Training
Residents work shoulder-to-shoulder with pharmacists, clinical psychologists, social workers, and advanced practice providers in both the hospital and continuity clinic — not as observers, but as integral members of the care team. This is how modern primary care is practiced, and it's how we train.
Sports Medicine Excellence
USF Health Sports Medicine provides care for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, USF Athletics, Saint Leo University, USA Hockey, and spring training for the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. Our residents rotate with this team, gaining hands-on sports medicine experience at every level.
Research & Innovation
Residents lead scholarly projects, teach medical students, and build expertise in point-of-care ultrasound, clinical informatics, lifestyle medicine, and more. USF Health attracts nearly 70% of the university's total research awards — our residents have access to that ecosystem.
Tailored Training Tracks
Choose from eight specialized tracks — including Lifestyle Medicine, Sports Medicine, Global Health, Clinical Informatics, and Academic Medicine — to shape your residency around your career goals. Optional fourth-year extensions are available for residents pursuing an MPH or MBA.
Helping Our Region
Tampa Bay ranks fifth in Florida for anticipated physician shortages. Our program was founded to directly address this gap — training family physicians who will stay and serve in the communities where they train. By embedding residents in Tampa's diverse neighborhoods and partnering with community health organizations, we are building a pipeline of primary care physicians for the region that needs them most.
